After Russia's civil war Lenin had some work to do. He had just fought the "whites" which was all of the opposing countries to Russia. Russia at the time was known as the reds. He introduced the idea of war communism which ended free trade and was designed to keep the army stalked up on weaponry. The power struggle that followed Lenin's death was between trotsky and Stalin. Stalin drove trotsky out of Russia with the new power he had been given after the death of lenin. He exiled Trotsky and once he left put him on trial for treason. I believe Stalin tried to modernize Russia but was not successful.

The first revolution was focused on removing the tsar. The people disagreed with the decisions if the tsar and wanted him to be removed. Riots began to break out in the city with the drive to bring in provisional government. Alexander Kerensky eventually replaced the tsar. Both the tsars new and old wanted to stay in WWI. The later revolution was based out of Petrograd. The Bolsheviks, lead by Trotsky, took 20 ,000 armed men to Petrograd and demanded the Soviets to take power. It was successful because Bolsheviks had taken change and Russia had been withdrawn from WWI.
In the movie I admired the idea of creating a hero for the soldiers fighting for Russia to look up to. Although some of Russia's tactics in the war were not far from barbaric they did manage to rally enough support to defend their land. I believe that biggest down fall to Russia's defence was that they had no military strategy. They sent their men out to fight in mass waves of attacks in the open that lead to most of them being gunned down. If that wasn't enough, by them shooting all the men who retreat just increased casualties and thinned the number of men they had to fight. Russia could have saved many men by changing their plan of attack.
